At the turn of the twentieth
century, Harriet Hubbard Ayer wrote a column for
the New York World.
In her column she dispensed beauty advice
to women. Although
her advice would seem hopelessly outdated today
and from a feminist perspective, even perverse, it
was revolutionary for its time.
It is true that it catered to the
patriarchal establishment’s accepted rules of
beauty and the role of women in general; and yet
through deeper, less obvious means, it helped
women to define themselves on their own terms. Indirectly, it helped foster an independence amongst women,
especially the poorer women.
Her charms were substantial.
For it was these women specifically, who
were being targeted by the World.

Mrs. Harriet Hubbard Ayer may
have took a traditional view when it came to
beauty and cosmetics, but many of those who read
her column would soon join together, demand
suffrage, and help bring into existence today’s
modern woman.
Included here is a bio of
Mrs. Ayers, and examples of some of her advice,
taken from
her book, Harriet Hubbard Ayer’s Book: A Complete and
Authentic Treatise on the Laws of Health and
Beauty.
