Rare Early Coins of the United States Mint

This web site depicts rare early coins from the US Mint including Colonial coins as well as early US coins such as the Eagle, Half Eagle, Double Eagle and more.  In 1839, the U.S. Congress appropriated the sum of $1000 for the purchase of “specimens of ores and coins to be preserved at the Mint.”

The following links will detail the coins that were purchased by the U.S. mint and displayed at that time. Hundreds of individual coins are photographed and described. These ancient coins were chiefly arranged in upright cases against the walls in the doorways and in rooms on the second floor of the Philadelphia Mint.
