Philadelphia mint: Virginia Half Penny
The well-known Virginia half-pennies seem to have been very plentiful. A number of different dies were used.
A laureated bust of George the Third is surrounded, as on the English half-penny, with his title, "GEORGIVS III. REX." The reverse has an ornamental and crowned shield, emblazoned quarterly: 1, England impaling Scotland; 2, France; 3, Ireland; 4, the electoral dominions. Legend: "VIRGINIA."
