The student of ceramic art has reason to be
interested in the history of Egyptian art. No
other in ancient times was so powerful or had such
influence in the department of our present study.
Each new discovery which is made leads towards the
conviction that the art of enamelling pottery,
which has been, wherever known, the highest means
of uniting beauty with utility, first invented by
the Egyptians nearly or quite four thousand years
ago, has never been practised by any nation which
did not, directly or indirectly, learn it from
them.

This example of an art never wholly lost out of
the world for four thousand years--an art which
contributes so much to the civilization and
refinement of the race--has deep interest to the
student.
