Q&A – Ceremony and Reception at Same Location

Q: My wedding will be in a small church and the reception will follow in one of the church's basement rooms. How can I word this on the invitations? Do I need a separate reception card since everything takes place in one location?

A: No separate reception card is required when the wedding and reception take place in the same locale. The easiest way to let your guests know this is to add the line "Reception to follow" at the bottom of your invitation. You can also state this in a more casual way, for example: "Please join us for a brunch reception immediately after the ceremony." It's a good idea to have ushers or other attendants ready to direct guests to the reception room in case anyone isn't clear on the location.
